Observation

A video was observed of a toddler climbing up on a planter on the toddler playground outside Toddler A classroom. There were two staff on the playground at that time and neither staff were actively supervising the child climbing on the planter, they were facing away from the child. The video is 20 seconds long. During staff interviews, it was reported that children often try to climb on the planter and one staff said that staff allow them to climb on the planter. It was also reported that staff often face in the direction of the other playground and that staff often socialize during outdoor play and do not actively supervise the children. Given that the planter is something the children are known to climb on, it would be expected that staff would position themselves to be able to view this area. The staff were not available or able to promptly assist or redirect the child when the child climbed up on the planter.
